Irwindale Chamber of Commerce
Selects LA Works as “Business of the Month”
JUNE, 2009

LA Works was recently honored by the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce for their work with the community at their June, 2009 meeting.  The Chamber announced LA Works’ selection as “Business of the Month” and presented a beautiful plaque to LA Works staff members Mario Rodriguez, Hilario Bercilla, and Benjamin Brus.

The Irwindale Chamber of Commerce pays tribute to agencies and companies that have  excelled in the following criteria: growth, staying power, workplace innovation, and commitment to community.  The Chamber expressed that:

“LA Works is a governmental human services organization founded in 1976. In the 32 years of service to the community, LA Works has provided job training and placements to over 25,000 adults and youth, and provided housing rehabilitation services to hundreds of San Gabriel Valley residents. LA Works administers Dial-A-Ride programs to the elderly and disabled as well as energy conservation education. Most of the services are provided to low and limited income individuals.

LA Works provides a “College Works” Program to low income high school students. This is a residential college workshop for 2 weeks at the University of New Mexico, followed by a year of college entrance counseling. LA Works also administers CALGRIP – a gang reduction program designed to put gang members back in school working toward their GED/Diploma and finding a job or career. LA Works provides members with invaluable service including youth workers during the summer.”

Salvador Velasquez, LA Works’ Chief Executive Officer, said “It is a great honor to be recognized by the Chamber for our achievements.  Our staff is very dedicated to the community and works hard to assist those in need.”
