LA Works Receives Funding To Serve Recently Released Veterans
DECEMBER, 2008

Irwindale – LA Works, a WorkSource Center providing assistance to businesses and job seekers throughout the northeastern San Gabriel Valley, has just been awarded $499,600 through the Governor’s Workforce Investment Act Veterans’ Employment-Related Assistance Program (VEAP).  According to Kevin Stapleton, LA Works Board Chairman, funding will focus on transitioning veterans to high-wage high-growth occupations within California using their skill sets obtained in the military, targeting recently separated veterans of the US Armed Services, National Guard and Reservists.  The duration of the funding will be 2 ½ years.

The Project will provide occupational skills training, career development and placement services to 80 veterans.  While working to strengthen the workforce development and support services delivery system for veterans in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, the Project will assess veterans’ transferable skills and, in partnership with local education agencies, offer training for high wage, high growth occupations/industries.  Training will include programs in CNC Machining, EMT, Energy Efficient Construction, Electronics Technology, Welding and Appliance Repair.  Entry wages will range from $10 to $23 per hour.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to serve our returning military men and women.  There is a tremendous need to provide our veterans with the support and services to enable them to return to the civilian workforce.  They have served our country, now it is time for us to serve them,” said Kevin Stapleton.

The LA Works WorkSource Center provides job seekers a comprehensive system of Training, Placement and Career Placement services; and to businesses a wide range of professional services including Job Placement and Training Assistance, Internet Job Postings, Recruitment Services and Videoconferencing.  Our community services include:  Home Improvement, Transportation for Seniors and individuals with disabilities, At-Risk Youth Work Experience Programs, On-Campus College Experience for low-income high school students, Energy Conservation and Neighborhood Beautification.  Based in Irwindale, LA Works was founded in 1976 as the primary public job training and placement center for residents of cities of the East San Gabriel Valley.
