LOCAL JOB SEEKERS ATTEND "OLDER AND WISER: UNLIMITED EXPERIENCE" SEMINAR
OCTOBER, 2008

Irwindale, CA – LA Works Partnership is happy to announce the success of their recently held ‘Older and Wiser: Unlimited Experience’ Seminar. Salvador Velasquez, Chief Executive Officer of LA Works said “This is the fourth year our partnership has sponsored this event.  Staff and partners do a wonderful job of educating the public on the vital role our older Americans play in maintaining our economy and our leadership in the world marketplace.  Every year it just gets bigger and better!”

The seminar was designed for job seekers aged 40 and above.  Frequently referred to as “Baby Boomers”, these workers are now the majority of our workforce.  In fact, America is observing an exciting growth in the number of workers who are 55 or older, a movement that will continue well into the future.  Held on October 1st , in recognition of National Employ Older Workers Week, the seminar drew job seekers and employers from the East San Gabriel Valley and sought to increase awareness while developing strategies to tap into this labor pool.

Douglas Calderon of Motivational Systems International, Inc.  was the Keynote Speaker and wowed the audience with his enthusiasm and knowledge. Juan Millan of the Labor Market Information Dept. of EDD gave a moving speech entitled “What’s Ahead”,  Jose Tello of Neighborhood Legal Services discussed ‘Employee Rights’, and Anita Wallace inspired all with her presentation on ‘Experience with a Purpose’. Presentations were also given by Ted Anderson and Rex Yu of the LA County Mature Workers Council.  Finally, the Ladies in Red wrapped up the event on a positive note by reminding the audience of their importance and value as employees.

Consistently the high point of the Older and Wiser seminar, the Employer Panel provided the opportunity to speak directly with employers regarding their hiring needs. Several members of the audience addressed the panel with questions that concerned many of the attendees.  The Panel, consisting of a representation of local employers, did a wonderful job of providing educational  and meaningful responses based on their expertise and experience.

LA Works partnership consists of Employment Development Department, Department of Rehabilitation, East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program, Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District, Pathpoint, Inc, the Department of Public Social Services, the Central San Gabriel Valley WorkSource Center and Los Angeles County Title V Program.
