EMPLOYEES PREPARE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GREAT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT
OCTOBER, 2008
Irwindale, CA – LA Works will participate in the Great Southern California Shakeout on November 13, 2008. Coordinated by the Southern California Earthquake Center /Earthquake County Alliance and a number of other sponsors, the event is designed to prepare Southern Californians for the “Big One”. Like any other activity, the key to success is knowledge and preparedness. You can prepare by knowing what to do when the big earthquake hits.
At 10:00 a.m. on Thursday November 13 LA Works employees will join millions of people in an earthquake drill. “The safety of employees is a major concern here at LA Works. We hold regular evacuation drills, earthquake drills, earthquake kit contests, and other safety activities on a regular basis. Our safety committee is doing an excellent job of educating staff and preparing them for emergencies” said Salvador Velasquez, Chief Executive Officer of LA Works.
The Great Southern California ShakeOut drill is based on a potential 7.8 magnitude earthquake. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake is about 5,000 times larger than the Chino Hills earthquake of July 29th. Dr. Lucy Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey and a group of over 300 scientists have studied the likely consequences of an earthquake of this magnitude. In an earthquake of this size you can expect the shaking to last for approximately 2 minutes.
The Great Southern California ShakeOut has been organized to help raise awareness as well as help Southern Californians prepare for the big earthquakes in our future.
