LA WORKS VOLUNTEERS IN VETERANS MEMORIAL
WALL
The Moving Wall, a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C., was on display in Covina Park May 9 to 12. An opening ceremony took place on Thursday, May 9, and a remembrance ceremony on Saturday, May 10. It's been ten years since Covina hosted this mobile memorial - one of three walls like it that travel around the country about eight months of the year. The Moving Wall was on display around the clock during its five-day visit. Volunteers, including LA Works, kept watch of the wall, typically in two-hour shifts. While only about 30 or so people milled along the memorial on Thursday afternoon, thousands attended through the weekend. Vietnam casualties with ties to Covina had special name plates set apart from the wall, along with a bouquet of flowers by their name. The concept of The Moving Wall was developing in 1982 when veteran John Devitt attended the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Soon after, Devitt vowed that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the emotion and patriotism a visit to the memorial brings, whether or not they could travel to Washington.
