CITY OF IRWINDALE YOUTH PROGRAM
OCTOBER, 2007
Irwindale, CA – LA Works has just completed the first
session of a new program offering entitled ‘Career Essentials’.
Under contract with the City of Irwindale, the program was developed to
provide training for its residential youth. The program included six (6)
hours of intense training over three (3) sessions on topics designed to
give the students the tools needed to achieve both academic and career
success. Career Essentials training is the core of LA Works’ career
education and work experience programs. These trainings create the foundation
of developmental characteristics employers are looking for in their employees.
The goal of our classes is to coach students towards those characteristics,
help them prepare for the work environment, and become productive members
of our communities. The following list is a sample of the topics covered:
· Work Ethics & Entrepreneurship
· Diversity & Customer Service
· Thinking and Problem Solving
· Effective Written, Verbal & Non-Verbal Communication Skills
· Occupational Safety
· Employment Literacy
· Interviewing and Job Survival
· Technology Literacy
Combined with academic skills preparation, students had the opportunity
to prepare for entry into the work force by gaining knowledge about the
expectations employers have about attitude, preparedness, and skills through
the work-readiness programs offered at the LA Works facility. Occupational
Skills training consisted of four (4) career exploration phases: Self-Assessment,
Occupational Research, Decision Making, and Job-skills building.
