LA Works SPONSORED MATURE WORKERS SEMINAR Irwindale, CA – LA Works sponsored first annual seminar, “Older and Wiser: Good for Business,” to support the increasingly growing population of mature workers. The well-attended event occurred in recognition of National Employ Older Workers Week, September 18 – 24, 2005. America is witnessing a dramatic growth in the number of citizens who are 55 or older, a trend that will continue well into the 21st century. As our population continues to age, older Americans will play a progressively more significant role in maintaining our economy and America’s leadership in the world marketplace. First celebrated in the Eisenhower Administration, and celebrated nearly every year since that time, National Employ Older Workers Week activities focus on recognizing the importance of the participation of older workers in the labor force. By 2008, 40 percent of the labor force will be age 45 or older, and 8 million more Americans age 55 or older will be in the labor force than there were in 1998. This population of mature workers includes individuals who are retiring at young ages and want second careers, individuals who want to work beyond age 65, and those individuals that want some source of income, but not necessarily a full time job. National Employ Older Workers Week provides an opportunity to increase awareness and focus on development of innovative strategies for tapping into this underutilized labor pool that can help address the challenge posed by potential worker shortages. A few hundred people attended the half-day event at the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Diamond Bar headquarters. LA Works, Employment Development Department, Department of Rehabilitation, East San Gabriel Valley Occupational Program, Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District, and Los Angeles County sponsored the seminar. The days activities included workshops on topics such as successful job search techniques, resume development, keeping up with technology and a fast-changing working environment, laws protecting workers against age discrimination, and job opportunities and services for older workers. A panel of local employers was invited to speak and voice their views regarding hiring mature workers. “Many, many employers want to hire your, said Pam Gefke, president of Gefke International, a leadership development firm, “because you’re older and wiser. You bring a lot of experience to the table.” Founded in 1976 as the primary public job training and placement center for residents of cities in the East San Gabriel Valley, LA Works, a WorkSource Center, improves the quality of life of all customers, including career enhancing and educational opportunities, as well as community and business services.
